The Grudge brief contextual research + considerations
OVERVIEW
The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or
extreme sorrow. The curse gathers in the place where that person died. Those who encounter this murderous supernatural force die and the curse is reborn, passed from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror.
Consideration
- I like the close up they have used in this poster. It bears a mixture of emotions that is portrayed simply but effectively. I could experiment with ways to show emotion using a close up for my own poster through my own photos
- The colour scheme of which they have used for this poster; red, white and black go together well to create a horror film effect. I decided to use this recognised colour palette because I want to directly through my poster and trailer.
Propp's theory of characters
Kayako Saeki- She represents a popular antagonist in Japanese culture, the vengeful ghost(Onryō). She is typically characterised by long dark hair covering her pale face, unsettling wide eyes, twisted movements with crunching neck bones, and a haunting death rattle. VILLAIN
Toshio Saeki- Toshio shares a main role with his mother Kayako, and has became an icon of Japanese horror and the general horror genre as well. VILLAIN
CONTEXT
Onryo- According to traditional beliefs of Japan and in literature, the onryō (怨霊, literally translates to "vengeful spirit", or sometimes rendered "wrathful spirit"[1]) refers to a ghost (yūrei) believed capable of causing harm in the world of the living, harming or killing enemies, or even causing natural disasters to exact vengeance to those who have wronged them when they were alive then takes their spirits from their dying bodies. This is very intriguing for the antagonist in my trailer, as the demon that is resurrected exacts revenge on the person who destroyed the drawing.

Further feedback from a wider audience for trailer
Candidate 1-
- "You should definitely make the trailer more fast paced, I feel that it gives away some of the plot"
- "I like the use of blood"
- "The music is very intense"
Candidate 2
- "I love the use of drawings and the signs makes the trailer more foreboding"
- The camera movement is too shaky.
- EBI- "you can make the transitions more flashy"
